PALS befriender role

Response to survey findings in 2017

Results from the 2017 National Inpatient Experience Survey showed that only 29% of patients at Nenagh Hospital found someone to talk to about their worries and fears

Patients could not find someone to talk to because they did not know who to ask. To address this issue, the hospital established a befriender PALS volunteer service.

In the 2018 National Inpatient Experience Survey 47% of patients said that they definitely, or to some extent, found someone to talk to about their worries and fears. The success of this initiative has led to a similar programme being piloted in University Hospital Limerick.
