The National Maternity Bereavement Experience Survey

The National Maternity Bereavement Experience Survey asks women and their partners about their experiences of maternity bereavement care and includes questions on diagnosis, admission, labour and birth, postnatal care, bereavement, discharge and follow-up care.

The findings of this national survey provide valuable information on the standard of maternity bereavement services in Ireland, acknowledging what is working well and identifying areas where improvements are needed.

What questions were asked?

The National Maternity Bereavement Experience Survey questionnaire contained 99 questions covering different aspects of bereavement care in maternity units and hospitals in Ireland including  admission, communication, labour and birth, care after birth and meeting your baby, postnatal care, bereavement care, discharge and follow-up care.

The Survey timeline

The timeline below describes the different phases in the National Maternity Bereavement Experience Survey cycle.

Survey goes live

Women and their partners who experienced a second trimester miscarriage, a stillbirth or an early neonatal death and received inpatient care in one of Ireland’s 19 maternity units or hospitals between 1 January 2019 and 31 December 2021 were invited to participate in the survey.

The online survey was open to all eligible participants from 1 September to 31 October 2022 (8 week period).

The results are then analysed and the reports are prepared for publication.
