The National Cancer Care Experience Survey is currently in development and will be the first national survey of its kind in the Republic of Ireland.

The purpose of the survey is to gather the experiences of people receiving cancer care and treatment in public hospitals, giving them the opportunity to share their experiences, from diagnosis to follow-up care. The survey findings will be used to determine what is working well and to identify areas for improvement.

The findings of this national survey will drive service improvements across cancer care settings, and will be used to inform national policies and standards.

This survey is being developed with the support and collaboration of the National Cancer Control Programme (NCCP). The NCCP works with health service providers and other partners to prevent and treat cancer, and increase survival and quality of life for those who develop cancer, by converting the knowledge gained through research, surveillance and outcome evaluation into strategies and actions.

International review

An international review of cancer care experience surveys was carried out to identify and analyse international best practice with regard to the models and methodologies used to deliver a national cancer care survey. Please click here to view this document.

Survey model development

To develop the survey and identify key topics in cancer care, we conducted focus groups with people who received cancer care and treatment, as well as health service professionals, support organisations, regulation and policy-makers, and representatives of special interest groups. A gap analysis was conducted to further identify the most relevant questions to the Irish context of cancer care.

A Delphi study is currently underway, which will be followed by cognitive testing and Picker Institute Europe will check the measurement and analytical quality of the questions.
